Our dogs, cards on the table

Every breeding dog’s DNA profile is on file at Vetogene: in Italy it is the only compulsory check for a breeder. The official hip and elbow reading is not compulsory, and it is exactly where most websites stay vague: we had it done on Axila, whose hips are grade A, and it has not been done on the other dogs. Each profile shows the real status, item by item. We would rather have a box that says “not done” than a phrase like “health-checked parents”, which means nothing.

By day, outdoors

The adult dogs move freely around the kennel’s large runs and green spaces, in contact with us and with the world outside. That is how they keep their muscle tone, balance and sociability: three things no supplement can replace.

Nights and meals

Each dog has its own covered, dry and sheltered resting area. Eating without competition and sleeping undisturbed matter as much as space: it is also how we manage seasons safely.

No round-the-clock confinement

The kennel box is a tool for safety and for managing biological rhythms, not a place to park a dog all day. When you visit you can see what it is like and how much time the dogs really spend in it.

Understanding the health records

What do the HD and ED grades on the dog profiles mean?
HD stands for hip dysplasia, graded on the FCI scale from A to E: A is free, B near-normal, and from C onwards it counts as dysplasia. ED stands for elbow dysplasia, graded from 0 to 3, where 0 is free. This reading is not required for breeding: it is a voluntary check. We had it done on Axila, whose hips are grade A; it has not been done on the other breeding dogs, and their profiles say so.
Can I see the parents’ health certificates before booking?
Yes, the ones that exist. The DNA deposit certificate and Axila’s hip report can be seen during your visit to Comabbio, and on request we will send you copies before you commit to anything. Where a dog’s profile says “not done”, there is no document to show, and we would rather tell you before than after.
What is the difference between a “clear” dog and one that is “clear by parentage”?
A clear dog has been tested directly on its own DNA. A dog that is clear by parentage has not been tested, but both its parents tested clear: genetically it cannot be affected. ENCI (the Italian Kennel Club) accepts both for breeding.
Do you also use sires from outside the kennel?
Yes, when we need to broaden the genetic base or correct physical traits. Outside sires are marked as such on their profiles and, like our own dogs, must have their DNA profile on file: that is what makes the litter’s parentage verifiable. Where a sire also has official hip and elbow readings or genetic tests, we list them on his profile.

Would you like to meet them in person?

By day they roam free in the runs and the green spaces: when you visit you will meet them all, along with the original certificates. It is best to write rather than phone: Enrico replies with the help of a translator.
